On August 7, Iran executed nuclear physicist Shahram Amiri for treason. Amiri had previously defected to the US, where he reportedly revealed secret information about Iran's nuclear program. Amiri then voluntarily decided to return to Iran, where he was initially welcomed before receiving a lengthy prison sentence.
