On December 30, BBC Arabic reported that the Bahraini judiciary has extended the detention of Ali Salman, a prominent Shiite politician. Salman, the secretary general of the Islamic Wifaq Association, the largest opposition political constituency in Bahrain, was detained earlier in the week for his role in protests and inciting dissent. Bahrain is a majority Shiite country with a Sunni-led constitutional monarchy.
