Since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war, Syrians have been seeking medical and humanitarian assistance from a sworn enemy, Israel. In 2013, Syrians began heading towards the Israeli border in record numbers. Despite the concerns of Israel’s government, both the military and hospitals in the north have treated casualties of all ages and in the process has built bridges between two worlds. For this course, you will prepare you to read and watch Israeli news articles, IDF press pieces, and news reports shedding light on Syrians who have sought treatment in Israel. The Hebrew vocabulary you will learn in the lessons is a combination of core medical, humanitarian, and military-related terms, such as:
חצו את הגבול – crossed the border
זכויות אדם – human rights
זקוקים לעזרה – in need of help
