In October 2019, popular protests erupted in Lebanon calling for the dismissal of the government and a complete remake of the Lebanese political scene. Most recently, the protests led to the resignation of Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri. The non-sectarian protests erupted in response to the government’s inability to find solutions to an economic crisis that has gripped the country over the past year and widespread discontent over endemic corruption. This course will prepare you to read and watch Arabic media reporting on Lebanon’s protests and their economic and social causes. This course will help you master Arabic vocabulary related to demonstrations, protest movements, economic injustice, corruption, and social issues, such as:

مظاهرات تتواصل – demonstrations continue,

الناشطين – the activists,

بطالة متفاقمة – worsening unemployment
