Yazidis Mark New Year with Pleas for Kidnapped

Lesson Brief Al Sumaria
On April 15, Al Sumaria News reported on the Yazidi New Year, which far from being celebrated this year was marked by somber protest. A number of Yazidis, Northern Iraq's minority community that fled the wrath of ISIS last summer, prompting accusations of attempted genocide against the terrorist organization, took in the new year by releasing balloons into the air. The balloons carried cards with messages of hope and sadness about the fate of their loved ones. While ransacking northern Iraq, ISIS kidnapped large numbers of Yazidi women and girls, and reports of rape and forced marriages are widespread. This articles also discusses aspects of Yazidi faith and traditions. The video discusses the conditions of Yazidi refugees in Iraq.
