Women of Kirkuk speak out against polygamy
Lesson Brief
Alsumaria
The women of Kirkuk are speaking out against a proposed law that would encourage men to marry more than one wife for financial benefits. Many women in Iraq view polygamy as a violation of women's rights and ponder how anyone could think that a happy marriage could be built off of a woman's misery. Women's rights advocates in Kirkuk also expressed astonishment that the proposal was made by a female representative who sees increased divorce rates as a social problem that threatens women financially.
