Vilnius, January 1991

Lesson Brief Radio Svoboda
Despite the fact that the Soviet Union collapsed 25 years ago, the world is still feeling the effects of its dissolution. Whether it is the conflict in Eastern Ukraine, the annexation of Crimea, or the 2008 conflict with Georgia, the historical and contemporary impact of 1991 continues to impact the world. The history of the Soviet Union was especially felt in the Baltic States. In today's set we have an interview and discussion with Arkady Murashov, a former Peoples' Deputy of the USSR, and Vytautas Landsbergis, a former Peoples' Deputy of the Lithuanian SSR. They talk about the January Events in Lithuania when 13 people were killed by Soviet special forces, as well as the current situation in Ukraine and Russia.
