US, UK, France Close Embassies in Yemen

Lesson Brief BBC Arabic
On February 11, BBC Arabic reported on the decisions of the US, UK, and France to close their embassies in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa and evacuate their employees amid heightened security concerns. The embassies have been scaling back their operations for some time and the countries are now urging any nationals left in Yemen to get out. The decisions were made for security reasons as the Houthi rebels recent takeover of the capital has created a climate of insecurity and instability. Elsewhere, Al Qaeda affiliates, adversaries of the Shiite Houthis, control large swaths of territory.
