Uncovering the Government Building Crucial to Israel’s Independence – Part 1
Lesson Brief
NRG
On April 22nd, NRG reported on a Mikor Rishon publication which after intesnive research led the author to discover the building in which the privisional government and the provisional state council were established. Due to the British Mandate and international law, Israel was not officially allowed to name its own government bodies. Instead, the government used the basement hall of a school for Mizrachi girls to discuss different members joining the government and other important management and administrative details of the forming government.
This article is very difficult so take your time. A couple words to look out for: נפקד מקומו - "to be absent" is used in this article to indicate that the building in which the two institutions were founded couldn't be located or found, and therefore must not have existed. This article is saying, however, that we have finally figured out in which building this historically significant event occurred. Secondly, there are lots of technical governmental terms such as מועצת העם - "provisional council", מנהלת העם - "provisional government", רשות המחוקקת - "legislature", and רשות המבצעת - "executive authority".
