Ukrainian Parliament Votes to Cancel Non-Aligned Status

Lesson Brief BBC Russian Service
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko announced on Monday that the Ukrainian Parliament had voted to cancel the country's "non-aligned" status in pursuit of joining NATO in the future. According to Poroshenko within the next five to six years, Ukraine will be ready to hold a public referendum on the issue. It remains to be seen how this vote will play out over the coming years, as NATO's eastward expansion since 1991 has alarmed Russia.
