Tikrit “Liberators” Threaten Journalist, Hide Crimes
Lesson Brief
BBC Arabic
On April 12, BBC Arabic reported that Reuters' Iraq bureau chief Ned Parker has been forced to leave the country amid threats and denunciation of his recent reports on the conduct of government forces and Shiite militiamen who recently reclaimed Tikrit. The report claimed that Shiite militias pillaged, plundered, and committed extra-judicial executions. Initially threats appeared on social media to expel him from the country, but eventually advocated killing Parker to shut him up. Eventually, a television news station owned by Asaib Ahl al-Haqq, an Iran-backed Shiite militia that took part in the Tikrit campaign, condemned the report, posted Parker's picture, and advocated his expulsion from the country for "offending Iraq."
