The Slums of Iraq

Lesson Brief Al Jazeera
Today nearly 7 percent of all Iraqis live in slum neighborhoods and poverty. The situation is one of the outcomes of years of sectarian violence and the US invasion of Iraq. The slums are marked by high levels of theft and illiteracy, prompting government promises to implement a plan to deal with the problem. According to some reporters, the slums have the appearance of a past century, if not for the many cell phones and satellite dishes that proliferate on rooftops.
