The migrant crisis
Lesson Brief
BBC Arabic
On May 29, BBC Arabic reported that nearly 700 migrants died in the Mediterranean Sea over two days due to boat collisions and capsizes. According to sources, the accidents occurred on several boats, in rickety shape, which departed around the same time. The coinciding tragedies placed tremendous pressure on rescue fleets that have succeeded in saving some migrants, many of whom are arrested once they are brought to safety. The migrants consist of people fleeing Libya, Somalia, Syria, and other war-torn lands seeking a better life in Europe.
