Syria’s Ruined Economy

Lesson Brief An Nahar
On June 23, An Nahar reported on Syria's economy, ruined by four years of civil war. Various studies and reports have suggested that the cost of the civil war has reached at least USD 200 billion; however most believe that this number would increase, perhaps to USD 800 billion, if researchers could access different areas of the country that are still off limits. The report notes that development projects of the first decade of the millennium, a point of pride for the Assad regime, have been squandered. The article finishes with an interesting but somewhat odd piece of optimism for Lebanon, promoting the latter as an ideal location for the reconstruction of Syria, which the article notes will likely begin in certain areas of the country even as the battle rages on in others.
