Syrian Refugees in Jordan
Lesson Brief
BBC Arabic
On June 3, BBC Arabic reported on a growing Syrian refugee crisis in eastern Jordan, where Syrian refugees are stuck along the border area. Despite Jordan's open-border policy, there are reports that the refugees are not being allowed access to aid stations, are being kept in remote desert areas, and in some cases are being forcibly returned to Syria, a violation of international law when a refugee has a reasonable fear of persecution in his/her home country. Jordan has accommodated roughly 630,000 Syrian refugees since the Syrian civil war began.
The attached video reports on how the Syrian refugee influx in Jordan has escalated the country's water crisis.
