Refugees in Croatia: Humanity Beats Populism

Lesson Brief Deutsche Welle (DW)
As the flow of refugees continues and EU border countries spar over the best course of action, tens of thousands of Syrians are waiting in Croatia in hopes that Slovenia will open its borders. Croatian authorities have made an effort to get water and food for the refugees and to make sure that it is a safe place for them to stay in transit. However, refugees are still paralyzed by ambiguous and confusing registration rules, and many right-wing and extremist political parties are trying to cash in on some Croatians' populist tendencies and xenophobia.
