Pope Francis concludes trip to Armenia
Lesson Brief
Annahar
On June 26, Pope Francis concluded his trip to Armenia by releasing two white doves in the direction of Mount Ararat in Turkey, the traditional resting place of Noah's ark. During his trip, the Pope used the term genocide to describe the mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman troops between 1915 and 1917, angering Turkey. Turkey claimed that the Pope's comments echoed the spirit of the Crusades, which was strongly denounced by the Vatican, which stressed the purpose of the Pope's visit was to build bridges instead of fences.
