Omar al-Bashir Wins 94.5 Percent of Sudanese Vote

Lesson Brief Reuters Arabic
On April 27, Reuters Arabic reported on the re-election of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir with 94.5 percent of the vote. The high figure has prompted international criticism as evidence of a bogus electoral process with inflated numbers and a discouraged electorate with no motivation to head to the polls. Bashir, who has ruled Sudan for a quarter century, was predictably defiant, hailing the integrity of the elections and dismissing the criticism.
