No US Airstrikes Ahead of Iraqi Tikrit Operation

Lesson Brief Al Arabiya
On March 2, the Pentagon announced that it has not recieved any request from the Iraqi government to conduct airstrikes against ISIS targets in support of the operation to take back the city of Tikrit. Al Arabiya reported that this operation to reclaim Saddam Hussein's home town is considered the largest of several similar operations. The operation, currently underway, is reportedly being backed by the Iraqi air force and artillery. The attack is being considered a significant test of the Iraqi government's ability to confront ISIS militarily, but the incorporation of Shiite militias into the fighting forces has caused concern over potential sectarian implications in the Sunni stronghold of Tikrit.
