New Tunisian Government Composition
Lesson Brief
Al Arabiya
On February 2, Al Arabiya reported that Tunisian PM designate Al Habib al-Sid announced the composition of his new proposed government, which is to include 22 ministries and multiple other secretaries of state. In its current form, the three sovereign ministries - justice, defense, and the interior - were given to statesmen not aligned with any political party, while the other ministries were distributed among political parties aligned with the PM. One cabinet seat, the ministry of employment, was given to a member of Islamist political group the Al Nahda Movement, as were three secretary of state positions. The move was seen as necessary for a stable government, but other Islamist groups opposed to the government were angered by the Nahda Movement's agreeing to participate in it.
