On April 23, Euronews reported that German Chancellor Angela Merkel and EU officials made a quick visit to Turkey to support a one-month-old deal to return migrants to Turkey. Merkel and EU officials visited a refugee camp on Turkey's border with Syria during the trip. Turkish President Erdogan has threatened to torpedo the migrant deal if the EU does not allow visa-free travel for Turkish citizens. Merkel has come under criticism recently for allowing Turkey to pursue a criminal case against a German comedian who mocked Erdogan.
