Karimeh Abboud – The first female Palestinian photographer
Lesson Brief
CNN Arabic
On December 8, CNN Arabic profiled Karimeh Abboud, who was the first female Palestinian photographer, who was the first to document local Palestinian life prior to 1948, which is when Israel's War of Independence occurred and is often referred to by Palestinians as the Nakba or catastrophe. Abboud was born in Nazareth in 1893 and was of Christian Lebanese descent. She opened a studio to photograph women at the age of 17, which was the first time women had appeared in portraits and alone in photographs in Palestine.
