Iraqi President Tasks Abadi, Not Maliki, to Form Government
Lesson Brief
BBC Arabic
On August 11, BBC Arabic reported that Iraqi President Fouad Masoum has tasked Islamic Dawa Party member Haidar al-Abadi with forming the new Iraqi government instead of incumbent Nouri al-Maliki. If Abadi successfully establishes a majority coalition, he will replace Maliki as prime minister. The U.S. praised Masoum's decision and warned Maliki not to "stir the water" in its wake.
