Iranian Ships Waiting in Shatt al-Arab

Lesson Brief Al Sumaria
On September 21, Al Sumaria reported that 14 Iranian ships have been waiting in the Shatt al-Arab for nearly three weeks, because of their refusal to pay an increased Iraqi sales tax that has impeded them from unloading their cargo. The ships are carrying no less than 17,000 tons of imported cement and have not been allowed to anchor in Basra to unload their goods. The article stated that some of the ships crews are in need of medical attention and have begun to deplete their food and water stockpiles.
