During the Soviet times, the ports in the Baltic States were some of the most important and most modern in the entire USSR. However, after the fall of the Soviet Union and the crash of the Russian economy in the 1990s, the ports, and transit in general, fell into disarray. In addition, Russia feels that anti-Russian attitudes of the Baltic States towards Russia has made transit worse for both for it and Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
