Houthis Reach Out to Iran and Russia
Lesson Brief
BBC Arabic
On March 1, BBC Arabic reported that representatives from the Houthis, a Yemeni Shiite insurgency group now in control of much of Yemen including the capital Sanaa and much of the country's government infrastructure, went to Iran to strengthen relations with Tehran. The Houthis called their representatives a "government" delegation, a claim much of the population would dispute. That the Houthis would choose Iran as their first "official" trip abroad after coming to power should not be surprising; numerous governments have accused Iran of supplying aid, including military, to the Houthis. The Houthis are also looking to enter into oil deals with Russia, which like Iran is allied with Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad.
