Hezbollah Attack Kills Two Israeli Soldiers

Lesson Brief BBC Arabic
On January 28, BBC Arabic, citing numerous media reports and a statement from the Hezbollah, reported that the group has claimed responsibility for launching an attack on the Israeli side of the border, killing two Israeli soldiers. The area of the attack is a hotly contested issue. In response, Israel shelled Lebanese territories, killing a UN peacekeeping soldier from Spain. The attack comes ten days after Israel carried out an airstrike on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights, killing Jihad Mughniyeh, the son of one of Hezbollah's most prominent commanders, Imad Mughniyeh, as well as an Iranian military commander, according to various media reports. That attack, in turn, was preceded by an interview with Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, in which he said an Israeli attack on Syria was the same as an attack on anyone in "the resistance" and claimed his group was able to recapture the northern Israeli territory of Galilee. After this most recent attack, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to respond in force and France has called for an emergency UN Security Council meeting.
