Gasoline Quality in Mayssan, Iraq Frustrates Vehicle Owners
Lesson Brief
Al Sumaria
On June 16, Al Sumaria News reported on troubles facing vehicle owner in Mayssan, Iraq. Specifically, above average prices of high-quality gasoline have prompted vehicle owners to fill up with low-grade, local, un-refined fuel. According to the report, the poor-quality fuel has caused problems in many cars; one person claimed that 2015 models with no issues filled with the local brew keep malfunctioning. Much of the problem was blamed on the lack of local gasoline refineries.
This article interviews men on the street, and transliterates the Iraqi dialect, which is used extensively. Luckily, the interviews are provided in video form as well. In fact the article is mostly a transcription of the embedded video. This is a terrific resource for those interested in picking up some Iraqi dialect. The provided video shows a man driving in a "feetboom," an Iraqi term for a car with a particular type of fuel mechanism.
