Egypt’s Most Beloved Ramadan Songs

Lesson Brief Al Hayat
On June 26, Al Hayat profiled Ramadan musical traditions in Egypt. The piece focused on what the author considers the classics, works by Um Kalthoum and in particular "Ramadan Gaana," 'Ramadan has come to us,' by Mohammed Abdul Mutrib. According to the author, such music fused religion and music in a way never seen before, partly through the emergence of radio. From the time of Nasser to the 1990s, Ramadan music remained defined by these classics and no new developments were made. However, with the advent of new technologies and music platforms, according to the author, Ramadan-themed music has once again become a focus of Egyptian artists and popular among listeners.
