Egypt Tells Citizens to Stay Away from Libya
Lesson Brief
Al Sharq Al Awsat
On January 4, Al Sharq Al Awsat reported that the Egyptian government has issued a warning to its citizens to avoid traveling to Libya "under any circumstance," because of that country's deteriorating security situation. The warning follows the kidnappings of 13 Egyptian Coptic Christians in Sirt, a Libyan city situated between Tripoli and Benghazi; the total number of Egyptian Copts kidnapped in Libya is now 21. Sirte is controlled by Islamist militants opposed to the government of Libyan Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thinni.
