Egypt Raises the Price of Cigarettes
Lesson Brief
Al Sharq Al Awsat
On February 23, Al Sharq Al Awsat reported that for the second time in a year Egypt has raised the prices on cigarettes and tobacco. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi issued an executive decision to raise taxes on the ubiquitous Egyptian vice amid increasing government expenditure and declining revenue. Other economic resolutions were set forth, including an increase on the price of fuel, ostensibly to mitigate dependence on government support for energy supplies.
