Egypt, Oman Expanding Roles in Yemen
Lesson Brief
Al Sharq Al Awsat
On April 4, Al Sharq Al Awsat reported on Egypt's newfound determination to defend "Arab national security," in particular the Gulf, in its military assistance against the Houthi militants in Yemen, a grouped backed by Persian Iran. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi recently vowed to expand Egypt's role in the Saudi-led campaign, striking a we-are-in-this-together tone. At the same time, Iran has appealed to the Sultanate of Oman to play any active role in bringing an end to the fighting in neighboring Yemen. The video is in Egyptian colloquial Arabic, but it is not particularly difficult language.
