Doctors’ Orders against Saudi Blogger Raif Badawi Flogging

Lesson Brief BBC Arabic
On January 22, BBC Arabic reported, based on information from Amnesty International, that imprisoned Saudi blogger Raef Badawi was examined by a team of doctors and that his scheduled second round of flogging was postponed by Saudi officials. This is the second week in a row that Badawi's scheduled whipping was postponed, ostensibly for health reasons, although many have noted the timing of the delays, coming in the wake of international outcry against the terrorist attacks in France and the resulting broad international show of support for freedom of expression. Badawi, who runs a blog called Liberal Saudis, which advocated religious dialogue and open political discussions, was charged with apostasy and insulting Islam, for which he was sentenced to ten years in prison and 1000 lashes to be applied 50 at a time one day per week.
