Concerns over Humanitarian Disaster in al-Baghdadi
Lesson Brief
Al Sumaria
On February 24, officials in Iraq warned of a humanitarian disaster in the Iraqi township of al-Baghdadi located in Anbar Province, a largely Sunni province and an ISIS stronghold. Iraqi security officials recently claimed to have retaken most of al-Baghdadi, which lies close to the Al Asad air base where U.S. Marines are stationed, from ISIS forces who laid siege to the area for months. There are reports that during ISIS' siege of the town townspeople were cut off from food, water, and medicine, and according to a local official, children have been starving to death. The officials have appealed for immediate delivery of aid to the area. (See if you can catch the expression "ma kuu" ما كو in the video, which is Iraqi Arabic for "there isn't / there aren't").
