Lesson Brief
Радио Свобода
Sixty years ago, this month, Hungarian citizens living under communist rule began a revolution against the Soviet-backed, communist government in Budapest. Hungarians, fighting for freedom from communism, fought secret police and Soviet soldiers in hopes to change the government. In the end, the Soviet Union, then led by Nikita Khrushchev, sent in tanks and Soviet soldiers to stop the uprising. Hungary would remain under communist control for another 33 years.
