Berbers and Arabs Clash in Algeria
Lesson Brief
Al Sharq Al Awsat
On July 8, Al Sharq Al Awsat reported on the ongoing ethnic/sectarian tensions in Algeria that recently erupted into violence between various Berber and Arab tribes. The confrontations, centered around Ghardaia, Algeria, have caused the death of 25 people and dozens more injured, the deadliest such clashes in years. Riot control forces have been dispatched to the area and the Algeria government is scrambling to find a solution. This article describes the clashes as sectarian and not as ethnic because, in this case, the Berber community involved comes from the minority Ibadi sect of Islam.
