Beirut’s Trash Crisis

Lesson Brief BBC Arabic
On July 23, BBC Arabic reported on Beirut's ongoing trash problems. Trash has been piling up in the city after its primary landfill, located several miles south of the city, was closed down in the wake of popular demonstrations by locals complaining about the smells and pollution. Lebanon's environment minister, Mohammed Manshouq, announced he would be seeking the help of Lebanon's security forces to help dispose of the trash. Specialized companies have been tasked with collecting all of the trash that has been piled up throughout the country within 15 days.
