Asma al-Assad and the Syrian Civil War

Lesson Brief Al Jazeera
In January 2016, the first lady of Syria, Asma al-Assad made a rare public appearance and stated that the war in Syria had strengthened the resolve of the Syrian people. She also asked God for mercy on the souls of those killed by ISIS; however, she did not mention Syrian civilians who have been killed by the regime or are starving to death under sieges it has imposed on certain cities. Asma al-Assad was born in the U.K. and met Bashar when he was studying ophthalmology in London.  As the wife of Bashar al-Assad, she is subject to international sanctions and is a controversial figure because she has remained largely silent on the humanitarian crisis and war in Syria.
