33 Years Since Sabra and Shatila
Lesson Brief
Al Quds Al Arabi
On September 16, dozens of Lebanese citizens and Palestinians participated in a march commemorating the 33rd anniversary of the Sabra and Shatila massacre. In September 1982, an estimated 762 to 3,500 civilians were killed by the Phalange milita in the Sabra neighborhood in Beirut. The Phalange militia was allied with the Israeli army during the civil war, and Israeli forces failed to intervene to stop the widespread killing over a three day period, despite its knowledge of the atrocities.
